How Do I Look Up Warrants in Illinois?

IllinoisCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on IllinoisCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.

You can use IllinoisCourts.us to locate a warrant in Illinois, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Illinois's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. When available, a search reveals warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, among other details depending on the record type and issuing county.

Illinois has 102 counties — each with its own independently elected sheriff and circuit court clerk — making warrant records one of the most fragmented categories of public information in the state. Cook County alone accounts for roughly 40 percent of the state's population and maintains its own online case information system, while many of the state's smaller rural counties publish nothing electronically at all. The result is a patchwork: some counties offer online docket searches, others respond only to phone calls, and a few require in-person visits during business hours.

That structural reality means anyone trying to determine whether a warrant exists in Illinois faces a genuine obstacle before they can even identify which agency to contact. A consolidated lookup eliminates the need to navigate 102 separate systems — or guess which county issued the warrant in the first place.

Are Warrants Public Information in Illinois?

Arrest warrants and bench warrants are public records in Illinois once they have been executed or served. The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140/1 et seq.) establishes a broad right of public access to government records, including those held by law enforcement agencies and courts. Section 2.15 of the Act specifically addresses arrest and criminal history records: it requires law enforcement to furnish basic arrest information — name, charges, time and location of arrest, and the arresting agency — within 72 hours of an arrest, a faster turnaround than the standard five-business-day FOIA response window.

Search warrants, by contrast, are routinely withheld under Section 7(1)(d)(iv) of the FOIA, which exempts records whose disclosure would interfere with pending or contemplated law enforcement proceedings. Because search warrants are investigative tools, they are almost never made available to the public until the underlying case is resolved. Similarly, warrants connected to sealed indictments or juvenile proceedings remain confidential under separate statutory authority.

Even where a warrant is legally public, that does not mean it appears in any online system. Most of Illinois's 102 county sheriff's offices do not maintain a searchable warrant database. The gap between a record's legal accessibility and its practical availability is wide — a warrant can be a public record that no website publishes and no agency will confirm without a formal FOIA request.

How to Search for a Warrant in Illinois

  1. Use IllinoisCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
  2. Search state or county court portals directly. The re:SearchIL platform, developed through a partnership between Tyler Technologies and the Illinois courts, provides cross-jurisdictional access to electronic court records from all 102 counties, the Appellate Court, and the Supreme Court. Access requires registration with eFileIL credentials. For Cook County specifically, the Circuit Court of Cook County maintains its own public case information portal. Coverage varies by county — some have decades of digitized records, while others have only recent filings.
  3. Call the county sheriff's office or clerk of court. Have the subject's full legal name, date of birth, and the county where the case may have originated. Sheriff's offices can confirm active warrants over the phone in many counties, though policies differ. The circuit clerk's office can verify whether a case has been filed and provide case numbers for further inquiry.
  4. Visit in person. For counties that do not respond to phone inquiries about active warrants, an in-person visit to the sheriff's office or the circuit clerk's public records counter may be necessary. Anyone checking on warrants issued for themselves should be aware that an outstanding warrant can be executed on the spot.
  5. Retain an attorney. A criminal defense attorney can contact the issuing court or sheriff's office discreetly, confirm the existence and nature of a warrant, and advise on how to proceed without triggering an arrest.

How Long Is a Warrant Active in Illinois?

Arrest warrants and bench warrants in Illinois do not expire. Under 725 ILCS 5/107-9, a warrant of arrest remains active until it is executed, recalled by the issuing court, or quashed by a judge on motion. Search warrants are the exception: 725 ILCS 5/108-6 requires execution within 96 hours of issuance — one of the shorter execution windows in the country. After 96 hours, an unexecuted search warrant is void. Illinois arrest warrants may also include a geographic limitation on execution, specified not in mileage but by boundary, though warrants without such a limitation are enforceable anywhere in the state.

Illinois Warrant Records by County

Warrants in Illinois are issued and maintained at the county level, with each of the state's 102 counties operating its own circuit court and sheriff's office. Illinois has no centralized statewide warrant database accessible to the public. The Illinois Sheriffs' Association maintains a directory of all 102 offices, but warrant inquiries must be directed to the specific county where the warrant was issued or where the subject resides.
